Ironman 70.3: Antwerp, Belgium

Ironman 70.3: Antwerp, Belgium  Congratulations to Ironman 70.3 winners Bart Aernouts (1st place), Marino Vanhoenacker (2nd place), and Dirk Bockel (3rd place).  These champions swam 1.9 km (1.2 miles), bicycled 90 km (55.9 miles), and ran 21.1 km (13.1 miles).    It was inspiring to watch the competitors battle each other, and more importantly themselves.  The Grote Markt of Antwerp, Belgium was the perfect venue for the finish line, shown below.  You can see Bart Aernouts just before he crossed the finish line in 3 hours and 43 minutes.  The iPhone 3G photograph is a little grainy, but my memories of this time are sharp and vivid.  Ago vita vos somnium (live the life you dream)

Sunshine Paraglider

Sunshine Paraglider  With all of the sun and warm weather we have been having in San Diego, a sunset image of a paraglider above La Jolla, California is fitting.  Ago vita vos somnium (live the life you dream)

Olympic National Park: Sea Star Stacks

Sea Star Stacks  Second Beach, pictured above, was a pleasure to visit.  From the moment I headed out on the muddy winding trail, hilly terrain and thick mossy overgrowth lead me to believe I was about to experience a beach like no other.  In fact, Second Beach did not disappoint.  Plentiful boldly colored sea stars and numerous sea stacks (the eroded cliff pictured in the background) were nice surprises.  Ago vita vos somnium (live the life you dream)

K is for Estonian Art Museum

The Eesti Kunstimuuseum (Estonian Art Museum) has one of the most photogenic facades.  Thankfully I stumbled across this out-of-the-way museum while exploring Tallinn, Estonia.  By converting this image into black and white, the architectural elements and stainless steel "K" in the foreground are pronounced.

Venetian Back-alley

Venetian Back-Alley  Here, the hustle of Piazza San Marco is silenced.  Here, the melodious sonatas sung by gondoliers are silenced.  Here, the essence of Venice can be experienced.  At the time of this photograph on a Thursday morning, silence was only broken by the lapping sounds of water gently breaking at a nearby canal.  Numerous interesting restaurants, shops, neighborhoods, and architectural marvels lay off the beaten path of Venice's main attractions.  Try venturing into the secluded walkways of Venice's backstreets, you will not regret it.   Ago vita vos somnium (live the life you dream)

Skagit Valley: River of Flowers

River of Flowers  San Diego's bright sunny days remind me of my trip to Washington State.  Seattle and the surrounding areas were inundated with cloud-cover for much of my visit, but my memories are glowing.  The Skagit Valley's tulip and flower farms are one reason for my warm memories.  A slow pace, peaceful open space, nice people, and thick rows of tulips stretching to the horizon are all reasons visitors to Seattle should venture one hour north on Interstate 5 to Skagit Valley's Tulip Festival.  This photograph was taken just before dark clouds rolled overhead and let loose thick watery droplets onto the river of flowers.   Ago vita vos somnium (live the life you dream)

Subtle Cemetery

Subtle Cemetery  My visit to this cemetery in Copenhagen, Denmark was enlightening.  Since Denmark is such a small country and Copenhagen is built-out with very little vacant land, the residents use cemeteries as gathering places.  In the United States cemeteries and parks are seen as distinctly different.  However, the Danish use their scarce land for both laying the deceased to rest and as a place for the living to relax.  Ago vita vos somnium (live the life you dream)

First Edinburgh Rays

First Edinburgh Rays  It was refreshing to breathe soothing cool air after traveling for the better part of an entire day from humid Venice, Italy to Edinburgh, Scotland.  This is the first view I had of Scotland once off of a vehicle.  The deep blue sky and the sun's warm rays were a welcome reminder that every long travel day culminates in new experiences.  Ago vita vos somnium (live the life you dream)

Louvre, Pyramid, & Water

Sometimes photographers get lucky and other times we work hard to get the shot.  This photograph was a combination of the two.  I was out shooting with my Nikon when other people were eating dinner and enjoying Paris' nightlife.  Hanging around the Louvre at the "right" time was key.  I was lucky because virtually all the Parisians and tourists cleared out of the Louvre's courtyard.  The resulting image is near absent of people, save for a few shadows and blurry figures in the distance.  Diligence put me in the right place to take advantage of my surroundings, and what wonderful surroundings they were.

Tallinn Town Square

This photograph of Tallinn, Estonia is representative of the colorful and well preserved nature of Old Town.  The entire old quarter looks to be stuck in another century.  A castle, churches, red-tiled roofs, belfries, and vibrantly painted structures were all indicative of a time past.

When I began planning my trip to Europe I knew "far-off" places were a must and Tallinn's old world atmosphere truly brought that criteria to life.  This square is a gathering place for locals and tourists alike.  The town hall is on the right and the colorful buildings at left house wonderful open-air cafes.  In the morning, vendors fill the cobblestone streets to sell their goods.

London Heathrow Terminal (LHR)

London Heathrow Terminal (LHR)  The beginning of my journey took me through London's sprawling Heathrow Airport.  Once I navigated the airport complex and arrived at my terminal, I was greeted by pleasing modern minimalist architecture.  This terminal even had funky red leather padded sofas (pictured in the background) for guests to lounge on!  Nice touch.  As much as large airports are a bother, this terminal provided a nice respite from an otherwise long travel day.  Ago vita vos somnium (live the life you dream)

Piazza San "Empty" Marco

Piazza San Marco is the most visited attraction in all of Venice, Italy.  The masses that flock to Piazza San Marco during the day take something away from the essence of the Venetian square.  By visiting San Marco Square before sunrise I was able to visit this remarkable piazza without the buzz generated by hordes of onlookers.  A remarkable experience!
